Our Board of Directors

  • Chana Owens (Bonnett)-President

My name is Chana Owens. I have 4 generations that have attended Rogers and I'm always proud to say where I came from. My husband also attended Rogers and we are deeply rooted in the Hillyard area. We have a business on Market Street and are invested in continuing to be a big part of the community.

I'm very excited to be on the board for Hillyard Built. I think it's important to help these kids in achieving their dreams without the burden of financial setbacks. I look forward to help build up Hillyard and our youth and get rid of the stigmatism that comes with it. I know Hillyard Built will continue to grow and make our youth feel they can do anything they set their minds to.

  • Taylor Belote-Vice President

I'm Taylor Belote, and I'm the Instrumental Music Director at John R. Rogers High School, right in the heart of our Hillyard neighborhood. I grew up 3 blocks away from Rogers and was a Whitman Elementary, Garry Middle School, & Rogers High School alum myself. I am also an active performing musician in our area, playing drums in several bands, and for most local musical theater shows in town.

I am proud to serve on the Hillyard Built board as we continue to raise funds to expand opportunities for the youth of Hillyard. We want our students to know they are capable of anything, and to be able to pursue any passions and dreams they desire, without the costs being a barrier to their access. We want our Hillyard youth to know we are behind them as they strive for success!

  • Ciara May-Secretary

My name is Ciara May and I grew up in the Hillyard community and attended elementary, middle and high school systems that were all within the Hillyard neighborhoods. I am proud to have come from such a strong community and I’m proud this community has developed such an intricate role with in my own self development.

I obtained my master’s degree in social work from EWU in 2012. Primarily, I am employed as a lead worker aiding in the management of Social Workers for the State of Washington. Secondary, I also serve as a complex trauma focused mental health therapist who typically works with adolescents and young adults. My unique background paired with my Hillyard roots, has shaped me professionally and allowed a special skillset required for the work I do and have done for the past 14 years.

I am proud to have come from Hillyard with experiences unique to the same populations of child(ren) we serve. As someone who was born and raised in Hillyard, I am proof that geographic location is not always an indicator of where one may eventually land. I am proud and honored to serve on a board who shares this unique mindset that every person, no matter where you grew up, portray intrinsic talents that can allow for positive outcomes in life.

Our Volunteers

  • Crystal Via (Perry)-Founder/Executive Director

Heyyy-yo!! I cannot express through a screen how excited I am to see Hillyard Built grow and become so wildly accepted by our community. I can’t say I’m surprised, but I am so very proud and thrilled to be giving back to our Hillyard youth.

My parents currently reside in the same home where my siblings and I grew up and attended Regal Elementary, Shaw Middle School and Rogers High School. I graduated from RHS in 1999, obtained my AAS from SFCC in 2002, and my baccalaureate in business from Saint Martin’s College in 2005.

I officially began Crystal Madsen Photography in 2010 and have been operating that business full time ever since. As soon as I felt established as a business woman and had some extra time and money to give back, I looked for a way to give back to the community that built me into the scrappy, determined, and resilient woman that I am.

In 2021, the idea of shirts that loudly displayed my pride of being from Hillyard was formed. Within 48 hours that business idea sparked into my way of giving back and Hillyard Built was formed.

  • Cassandra Shaw-Conductor of Marketing

My name is Cassandra Shaw, and I am a third generation Pirate! Growing up, I had moved school quite frequently, but had attended two elementary schools in Hillyard. When asked in eighth grade where I wanted to attend high school, I knew I wanted to be a Pirate just like my mom, dad, aunt, uncle, and grandparents. And even though I have lived in many places around the Spokane area, I will always consider my grandparents house in Hillyard my home. Many of my favorite memories from my childhood was walking to the Hillyard library, pool, and parks with my grandma.

In June of 2023, I received my bachelors in marketing and business management with a minor in design from Eastern Washington University. When wrapping up my degree, I knew I wanted to be apart of Hillyard Built in some way. I’ve always wanted to give back to communities in some way or another, and what better way than to give back to the community that I was raised in? I am so thrilled to be apart of such an amazing organization, and to help give back to kids who should be able to have the same opportunities as their peers!
